Work starts on new look for Eagle Centre's Theatre Walk
14th Oct 2010
Shop fronts will be clad and frames painted white to lighten the area which runs outside Derby Theatre.
New shop signs will also be put up. The ceiling will show exposed structural steelwork and glass cubes containing changing coloured LEDs will light the walkway.
Businesses along the strip have welcomed the start of work, which has been planned by Derby City Council for several years.
Steven Blissett works at Timpson Ltd shoe repairs in Theatre Walk.
He said: "I think the work will really improve the area because it brings the old part in with the new Westfield centre and will tie it all in better.
"Lots of information has gone up outside the shops telling people about the work which is helpful and I think the signs will be good when they go up."
And shoppers said they were looking forward to the work being completed.
Greg Stocks, 31, of Abbey Street said: "I come to the market area quite a bit. I think this bit has looked dated for quite a while and that was made more obvious after the new Westfield opened. I think it will be good to see the area made to look more clean and modern.
"Maybe once it is finished it will encourage more people to shop in this bit rather than just walk through it to Westfield without noticing the shops here."
An information board has been put up in Theatre Walk to keep shoppers and traders in touch about the refurbishment and hours of work.
Construction for the 300,000 project is being carried out by contractors Tomlinson and is due to finish in December.
It will affect around 17 units, including shop fronts on one side of Theatre Walk and stalls on the other side.
Steve Meynell, head of estates at the council, said: It is to enhance the entrance to the market. The planning goes back a long time and the designs have been shown to traders who are being consulted on the signage which is going up."
