Somerset County Council cuts funding to cultural organisations

The local authority currently funds 10 cultural organisations directly, which are known as �key strategic organisations� and include the Brewhouse Theatre. The money will be axed from next year.
A second �160,000 pot, which supports the county�s creative industries, will be retained. A spokesperson for the council said that some of this money would now be used to help the arts organisations become �self-funding and self-sustaining�, not for performances.
The council spokesperson stressed the policy on the creative industries and arts funds will be formalised in the next month.
The council�s decision will impact its 2011-14 budget.
